Installing OpenLinux 32 Getting Started Guide Choosing an Installation Method The OpenLinux installation can be started using any of the following methods: Insert the “Kernel & Installation” CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive and reboot your computer. You must have a bootable CD-ROM drive (and have that feature enabled on your computer if necessary). CAUTION: Do not use this option if you need to share a hard disk between Windows and Linux, unless you have already prepared a Linux partition using Partition Magic. Continue from the “Starting the OpenLinux Installation” steps that you completed in Chapter 2. Boot from the Installation floppy diskette. If you need to boot from a floppy diskette because your system does not have a bootable CD-ROM drive, follow instructions in Chapter 2 to create an install diskette. (See “Creating an Installation Diskette” on page 28.) CAUTION: You should back up your hard disk before using PartitionMagic or any disk partitioning software. While Par- titionMagic has been thoroughly tested to be safe and reli- able, other factors (such as power failures or hardware defects), can put your data at risk. Therefore, before using any utility that makes extensive changes to your hard disk, you should always back up your data. Additionally, for Windows 3.x/95/98/NT users, make sure no other applications are running and that no other users are attached to your workstation (in a peer-to-peer network) before running PartitionMagic.
